India is already the third largest consumer of energy in the world. India retained its spot as the third-largest consumer of oil in the world.
The gas sector is among the eight core industries in India and plays a critical role in the growth of our economy. India has set its sight on becoming energy independent by 2047 and achieving Net Zero by 2070 . Country’s demand for gas is expected to almost double by 2030 to reach 115 BCM. By 2050, the demand for gas in the country is expected to rise to 170 BCM. The consumption of natural gas in India is forecasted to escalate at a CAGR of 12.2 percent to attain a figure of 550 MCMPD by 2030 from 174 MCMPD in 2021. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), in India the consumption of natural gas is expected to enhance by 25 BCM, registering an average annual growth of 9% until 2025. India’s industrial gases market is estimated to expand rapidly in the following years till 2026. Besides Indian government has introduced several policies to cater to increasing demand for oil and gas in India. It has allowed 100 percent foreign direct investment (FDI) in several areas of the sector, including natural gas, petroleum products and refineries, among others.
The Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas (MoPNG) is undertaking few initiatives with respect to the greater use of hydrogen and CBG in the energy mix. Hydrogen CNG (H-CNG) initiative, where hydrogen is blended with compressed natural gas (CNG) to the extent of 18%, for use as transportation fuel.
